YouthQuest Update

Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 3.03.43 PMMiddle School Summer on the Road was on fire this week, literally! Club week allowed students to choose between several options of activities in their favorite subjects of interest. The list included visiting the Japanese Tea House, Mott Community Colleges “Fab Lab,” creating murals with local artist Chris Watson, Adopt a Pet, Salem Housing and an on-campus visit with science and chemistry students from The University of Michigan Flint. Students were able to work crime scenes, create huge balls of fire, and observe a laser engrave water bottles, walk on actual Japanese soil and create computer-generated birdhouses. Students ended our week by giving back to local facilities in Genesee County. As a part of our Service Learning initiative, students helped clean, sort, wash and organize at several different locations across the area. Adopt a Pet, Eastern Michigan Food Bank, Salem Housing and Word of Life Church saw group of at least 20 and up to 50 students working together for a common goal!

YouthQuest Update

YouthQuest UpdateMiddle School Students from Carman-Ainsworth, International Academy of Flint, Kuehn-Haven and Lakeville all took part in the first of five weeks of enriching experiences. These experiences include trips off campus, overnight stays and leadership opportunities. During this period all students will be challenged, praised, mentored, inspired and engaged. Week one started off deep in the woods at Ligon Outdoor Recreation Center. Students were transitioned into groups and led through team-building, problem- solving and skilled challenges that allowed for teamwork and leaders to emerge. Students entered the woods as individuals and came out as a unit! Due to the weather, the newly formed unit spent day two at the home base of Word of Life Church in Flint. Guides entertained the group with several activities to familiarize themselves with each other by learning names, likes and dislikes. Students also participated in a group wide game of extreme musical chairs. This game sent 120 students through a maze of chairs eventually crowning one winner! The week ended with groups being separated and bussed to two different locations. Group A went to play disc golf and were rained out after two rounds of action. Group B were able to beat the rain and enjoy kayaking and canoeing in Columbiaville. For some, this was a totally new experience which caused them to depend on their shipmates to navigate the waves! Overall, the first week set the level of expectations very high for the remainder of the Summer Program. Judging from the upcoming schedule, students are in for even more fun and enriching experiences in the weeks to come!

Keep that School Year Momentum Going

There are numerous activities parents can do with their children to keep the focus on learning. The best part is the children will have so much fun doing them, they won’t even realize they are learning. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Read, Read and Read Some More: Read to your child every day. Reading levels improve more quickly when parents ask questions about the material and true discussions occur over the content. Set an example and make sure your child sees you reading.

Road Trip: While traveling, play “I Spy” with road signs/license plates for words, numbers, colors and shapes. Turn the inevitable question, “are we there yet?” into problem solving games involving elapsed time, distance traveled, and estimation.

The Great Outdoors: Go to parks and trails to walk or ride bicycles. Plant a garden or flowers together. Turn each outing into a biology or botany lesson. No need to pretend you know it all, go to the library and get books to help your child identify the animals, bugs, insects, plants, flowers, trees, and weeds. Outdoor community music festivals are a great way to experience a wide variety of music.

In the City: Visit your local museum during free admission days. Find free or inexpensive camps or events through your city’s parks and recreation department, local schools, or houses of worship.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game: A great place for math: learn how to calculate stats such as RBIs or ERA. Time the innings to calculate an average inning length. Come up with a strategy for estimating the number of seats in the stadium. Read a book about a baseball superstar before going to a game.

Volunteer: Contact a local service group or house of worship for volunteer opportunities. Contact a local soup kitchen or senior center to see how your family can help out.

Back Home: Make a meal together. Have each family member pick a favorite recipe and work together measuring ingredients and reading recipes. Talk about conversions: cups/pints/quarts/gallons, ounces/pounds, etc.

Using Technology: readingrocket.org can give parents reading tips for various ages. Starfall.com is a great site for young readers. For older students, look for free on-line classes offered through colleges and universities.

Move It: sign your child up for summer swimming lessons or other athletic events. Consider coaching your child’s team so you can spend that time together.

CAMS YouthQuest Update!

With only one week left of school left, students at CAMS began the school year wind down. In Girl Talk led by Ms. Barbee, our CAMS females learned how to create their very own healthy and nutritious “Fruit-Infused Water,” a healthier alternative to bottled flavored water. They chose their own fruity combinations of freshly cut fruits, dropped them into mason jars full of cold water, and let them sit for approximately two hours. The result: refreshingly cold flavored water that would rival any bottled water bought at the store. Students also participated in the last week of choir led by Mrs. Threldkeld. We thank and appreciate her greatly for sharing her lyrical expertise with our staff and students. Our CAMS males also concluded the final week of their Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood Club and took full advantage of the week’s warm weather by playing a game of organized touch football. We look forward to next week’s Family Fun Night at Richfield Bowl, followed by the YouthQuest End of the Year Celebration event at Bluebell Beach. We invite family and friends to join us on Thursday to join in on the fun in the sun and to conclude the 2012-2013 school year with a bang! We’ll see you there! CAMS YouthQuest Update!
