CAHS Counselor’s Corner

The CAHS Counseling department wishes all of our community members a Happy and Healthy 2013!  This is a very busy time of the year for our students.  Some of the most common Counseling questions are listed below.  As always, feel free to contact your student’s counselor should you have any questions.

Parents

  • Final Exams are January 23rd-25th at the high school.  Please plan to help your student prepare.
  • Review important school dates with your teen; dates are posted on the CAHS website.
  • Remind your student to double check College forms have been sent to the appropriate school officials for completion.
  • Attend the Financial Aid Night, on January 15th at 6:30, if you have an 11th or 12th grader.

Freshmen

  • Plan your time to study for finals; exams are January 23rd-25th.
  • Check your credits after the semester report card.  You should have at least three credits.
  • 90 minutes daily is the average study time suggested for 9th grade.
  • Review your goal for the year written through your EDP.  Are you achieving it?  Need help?  See your counselor.

Sophomores

  • Plan for Final Exam studies; exams are January 23rd – 25th.
  • Check your credits after the semester report card.  You should have at least nine credits.
  • Make an appointment with your counselor to discuss PLAN testing results.
  • 100 minutes daily is the average study time suggested for 10th grade.
  • Review your goals for the year written through your EDP.  Are you achieving them?  Need help?  See your counselor.

Juniors

  • Plan for Final Exam studies; exams are January 23rd – 25th.
  • Prepare and practice for the ACT/MME, coming up in March.
  • Check your credits after the semester report card.  You should have at least 15 credits.
  • 110 minutes daily is the average study time suggested for 11th grade.
  • Attend the Financial Aid Night, on January 15th at 6:30.  Bring your parent/guardian to this meeting.
  • Review your goal for the year written through your EDP.  Are you achieving it?  Need help?  See your counselor.

Seniors

  • Plan for Final Exam studies; exams are January 23rd – 25th.
  • Check your credits after the semester report card.  You should have at least 21 credits.  If not, see your counselor as soon as possible.  This could impact your graduation status.
  • Decide if you need to retake the ACT.  Check in the Guidance Office for registration deadlines.
  • 120 minutes daily is the average study time suggested for 12th grade.
  • Attend the Financial Aid Night, on January 15th at 6:30.  Bring your parent/guardian to this meeting.
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Complete scholarship applications.  Check on the CAHS’ website and in the Career Center from information, and use the search engine in your EDP.
  • Be sure that you have your plan for after high school completed.  College, apprenticeship, military, other?  Need help?  See your counselor.
  • Talk to your college friends when they come home for the holidays.  Ask them the questions you have about college.
