Big Blueberry Announcement From Blueberry Ambassador

Well, as you might have expected … We once again have turned off the results in our poll to determine the winner of the Readers’ Choice Award, which will be a surprise on Tuesday, May 12. Votes are still being collected until NOONFRIDAY so keep voting! Find it here: http://ow.ly/MCLu3

And, there is an additional surprise to announce: There will actually be A THIRD AWARD given during the ceremony. Blueberry Founder Phil Shaltz was so inspired seeing how hard schools are working to gather votes — despite pesky “cooling off” periods that have hampered several of you — he has decided to also reward both the 1st and 2nd place finishers in the Readers’ Choice Awards.

Last year, Mr. Shaltz awarded a surprise Special Recognition Award of $250. This year that Special recognition will go to the 2nd place finisher in the online poll.

The voting is sooo tight. The top six schools are within a few hundred votes and ANY school still could win. Remember last year, with just a one hour to go LITERALLY one vote separated first and second place.

Of course, Mr. Shaltz will also award the $500 Founders’ Award to the school with the student who performed the single best Blueberry Moment. And, we can report, Mr. Shaltz is busily reviewing all of your stories to make his selection.

We’ve gotten RSVPs from almost every school. Thank you! If we haven’t heard from you, please let us know if you will be coming. Email here or use the EventBrite email invitation to RSVP.

Thank you and KEEP VOTING!

Two CAHS Students Recognized At Saginaw Valley High School Association Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet

Two of our HS students were recognized at the Saginaw Valley High School Association Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Congratulations to both!!

Jessica Smith is a senior scholar athlete, team captain, and two-time MVP of the Carman-Ainsworth volleyball team. Jessica has been a varsity volleyball and softball player for all four years of her high school career. Jessica received All Big Nine Honorable Mention her freshman year in volleyball. She was First Team All-League for her remaining three years playing volleyball for the Cavaliers and earned All-Region honors as a sophomore and junior.

Jessica has had to overcome some challenges this past year, as a shoulder injury last summer made it difficult for her to earn the third All-Region honor. Jessica was named to the All-Academic Volleyball Team for the last three seasons of her career. During her time as a Cavalier, Jessica has played in 453 volleyball games and has accumulated the following statistics:

Service 1294/1381 (94%), 777 Service Points, 203 Aces, Attacks 2664/2960 (90%), 941 Kills, Digs 1480/1876 (79%) Jessica has also been a leader for the Cavalier Softball Team. She is a returning All Saginaw Valley League player and has great hopes for herself and her teammates this season. After high school Jessica plans to further her education at Mott Community College. She plans to attend Mott for her first two years, and later transfer to a university to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

Milik Dawkins is a senior at Carman-Ainsworth High School. During his four years at CAHS Milik has found himself on the Honor Roll, a part of the Big 9 All-Academic Teams, Saginaw Valley All-Academic Team, and The Michigan High School All-Academic Team for wrestling and football. Milik has taken numerous Advance Placement classes while playing football and wrestling for CAHS. He has been a four year varsity athlete in both sports and has maintained a 3.86 GPA. Milik was named to the “Michigan Dream Team” and was a NHSCA All-American, and two-time National Champion in wrestling. This past season Milik was the runner-up in the MHSAA finals in the 160 lb. weight class that went into overtime.

This past February, Milik was recognized as the Kiwanis Male-Athlete of the month for his accomplishments in athletics and in the classroom. Aside from being a scholar-athlete, Milik has also enjoyed spending time as a volunteer at Mt. Moriah Church serving as a youth director. He has also volunteered as a coach and mentor to kids through the Big brothers and Big Sisters organization of Flint as well as a number of other volunteer activities.

Milik plans to graduate from Carman-Ainsworth High School with high honors and further his education at Cornell University, Purdue, or The University of Pennsylvania. Milik plans to enter the medical field like his older brother Milton and become a doctor.

Three Little Pigs Came to Rankin

In March, students at Rankin Elementary were fortunate to be part of collaboration with the University of Michigan-Flint’s Opera Workshop. On March 11, several UM-F students, who are studying music education, came to teach lessons about opera in Mrs. Hall’s music class. Then, on March 13, those classes and several others were invited to watch the Opera Workshop performance of The Three Little Pigs. It was fantastic and had students on the edge of their seats. UM-Flint students mixed the theatrical tale, with operatic arias from Mozart. Dr. Josua May directed the show and Frank Pitts, a UM-Flint lecturer in music, played the piano accompaniment for this production. The one act opera, arranged by John Davies, touched on topics such as bullying and literacy.

The production is part of an ongoing UM-Flint opera outreach series. It includes nine performances at area schools and venues for K-5 students, with the final show May 1 at the Flint Public Library.
