Dye Elementary YouthQuest Update
Summer’s out for school! We’re one week in and back in action! The students jumped right in and didn’t miss a beat. The week went by quickly as we worked at getting to know each other, the program, and our new daily schedule. Students worked on their homework and then enjoyed games and activities, ranging from getting-to-know-you to team building. Schoolmates enjoyed hearing about all the fun activities enjoyed throughout the summer by both Camp YouthQuest and their other friends.
Mrs. Shim’s class counted all the petals on sunflowers, and how many sunflower seeds make up a sunflower. Students got back into the swing of daily homework, telling time and counting money, and delighted in getting caught up with friends that they’d missed over the summer. The open house was a big success! Many YouthQuest parents stopped by to say hello and meet their students’ Learning Guides. We explained the field trips and many lessons that we hope to instill in our YouthQuest students this year.

YouthQuest Update!
Summer programming wrapped up at Rankin Elementary with a week of “Fun in the Sun” and a virtual trip to South and Central America. Tuesday, we took advantage of a break in the bad weather to hold a day full of water games. The staff came in early to fill nearly 1000 water balloons for the students to toss, launch, and catch at several stations across the playground. The Learning Guides surprised the students by breaking out some hidden squirt guns and chasing them all over the grounds. Of course, they all pitched in to help clean up the mess afterword.
We invited parents and families to join us on Thursday for a party in their honor. Our “Fiesta de los Padres” had families enjoying crafts, games, and food from several different countries the students researched earlier in the week. They sampled Johnny Cakes from St. Thomas and a very pungent guacamole from Brazil while making Guatemalan Worry Dolls and breaking piñatas from Mexico that the kindergartners built. The 4th and 5th graders each created island drinks from Cuba and the Bahamas which were loaded with fresh fruit and juice. Students were enjoying themselves so much many didn’t even realize it was the last day of program until they were getting on the buses to go home.

Dye and Randels YouthQuest Update!
Wow! What a week at camp YouthQuest! We started it with a bang! After a crack of thunder and a bolt of lightning we had limited power. Another crack of thunder and a bolt of lightning and we had no power at all! But it didn’t stop us from having a great day! Campers came together in the gym under reserved power and had an awesome game of dodge ball followed by team building exercises and even arts and crafts in the mess hall. Approximately three hours later; the power kicked on and the awesome fifth grade girls had been busy making pom poms and cheered all the way up the hall as good as any Carman-Ainsworth’s High School cheerleading squad. Chanting give me a “P” give me an “O” give me a “W” give me an “E” give me a “R.” What do we got?Power!
This week campers are very busy preparing for our Fiesta Fiesta, making flags from Mexico, maracas, and piñatas. Campers are learning the Macarena to teach to others. The fifth grade girls made cake in a jar and homemade blue jean purses. Kindergarteners, first graders and second graders made fantastic under the sea pictures using sandpaper and made sand art in a bottle. Some of the campers made sombreros out of newspaper and tissue. The campers all agreed the best part of the week was the field trip to Torzewski Water Park in Lapeer County.
Campers devoured grilled Koegel’s hot dogs, chips, watermelon, lemonade, and cookies. They slid down a four-story-high water slide, while others chose to enjoy the pirate’s ship in Pirate’s Cove. AR- AR -AR-mates! But by the end of the day, all the campers stood underneath a huge mushroom and slid down a big frog into the icy cold water. Campers tried to wrestle a ten foot alligator in the kiddy pool without success. What a fantastic way to end a week! Light’s out see you at a flag pole next week. A good time was had by all!
Title I Science Students Learned about Petroglyphs!
Title I and Native American Education worked together to provide a free Summer Science Camp to elementary students. This is a lesson on petroglyphs. Dye and Randels students also made their own petroglyphs!
