FAFSA Information You Need

safe_imageSo you have applied to all the schools you want to and you are starting to receive acceptance letters. Now what? The next step is to apply for financial aid. Financial aid is a process and should be looked at that way. It all starts with the FAFSA which is not available until January 1st each year. However, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to get ready to complete it. The FAFSA requires several documents that you will need to have on-hand while you are filling it out. These documents are:

Student Information
• Your Social Security Card or Number
• Your Driver’s License or State ID (not required)
• Your 2013 W-2 Forms (if any)
• Your 2013 Federal Income Tax Return (or 2012 if you do not have 2013 completed)
• Your 2013 Untaxed Income Records
• Your Current Bank Statements
Parental Information
• Social Security Number
• 2013 W-2 Forms
• 2013 Federal Tax Return (or 2012 if you do not have 2013 completed)
• 2013 Untaxed Income Records
• Current Bank Statements
• Current Business and Investment Records
• Any other financial documents of your parents from the past year

Each college or university has a deadline that, if met, will allow you to be eligible to receive the highest level of financial aid. Knowing where documents with the deadlines can be found will save you time looking for them at the last minute.

It’s Never Too Early (or too late) to Begin Saving For College

shutterstock_133762829One tool available for families is the Michigan Education Savings (529) Program. Parents, grandparents, family and friends can start an account with as little as $25. Additional contributions can be made at any time in a variety of ways.

Any earnings on distributions from your MESP account used to pay for qualified higher education expenses will be free from Federal and state income tax.
Michigan taxpayers may also be eligible for a Michigan income tax deduction on contributions made to MESP up to $10,000 for married couples filing jointly or $5,000 for individuals filing single per calendar year. A Michigan taxpayer is permitted a deduction from Michigan adjusted gross income for a contribution(s) to a MESP account(s) less any Qualified Withdrawals from a MESP account(s) made during the same calendar year. Amounts transferred or rolled over from another Section 529 plan are not eligible for a Michigan income tax deduction.

FAFSA Information

shutterstock_122542897

In an effort to help prepare our graduating seniors for post-secondary study, we have partnered with Baker College to assist students and their families with completing their FAFSA. The staff at Baker is offering their help as a community service, regardless of the college your student has chosen to attend. This FAFSA application can make a big difference in whether or not students can afford to go to college. Both parent and student MUST fill out the FAFSA to qualify for grants, student loans, and many scholarships. So please reserve the evening of Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 at 6:00 pm to join us in completing the FAFSA, thus opening up a variety of financial opportunities for your child’s future. Watch for more information as the date grows closer.
