Carman-Ainsworth College Access Network

The CA CAN is one of 50 Local College Access Networks through-out Michigan. In each community, leaders in education, the nonprofit sector, business, government and philanthropy work together to design a local strategy – targeting particularly low-income students, first-generation students and students of color – to foster a college-going culture and increase the college readiness, participation and completion rates. Peggy Simpson (psimpson@carman.k12.mi.us ) is the network’s coordinator and works closely with CA CAN Leadership Team and CA High School.

As the leader in the state’s college access movement, MCAN’s mission is to increase Michigan’s college readiness, participation and completion rates, particularly among low-income, first-generation and students of color.  Michigan has recently experienced a modest increase in our college attainment rate – from 35.7% of 25-to-64-year-olds possessing at least an associate’s degree, to 36.8%. However, Michigan’s rate still lags behind the national average of 38.7%. It is MCAN’s goal to increase Michigan’s postsecondary educational attainment rate to 60 percent by the year 2025. The Bike Fair Was a Big Success!

Baker College receives a bike grant and partners with Assenmacher and Carman-Ainsworth.  Saturday’s bike fair was very successful. The community donated approximately 80 bikes. This winter volunteers will be repairing the bikes to give to Carman-Ainsworth students.  Applications are available at Community Education to be a recipient of one of the bikes.
