Supporting Healthy Children and Adolescents – Free Information During Physicals

shutterstock_111096869

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. There is no health without mental health.” Despite this, social and emotional health is often overlooked, especially in the youth. Like the body, it is important to identify problems early and do something about them.

Children and adolescents are not immune to social and emotional difficulties commonly seen in adults. In fact, they may present with difficulties in these areas, but also have the added stressors of being an adolescent, and can easily find themselves without the appropriate resources or supports in place to address them. To assist in promoting the well-being of our students, two post-doctoral psychology fellows from Hurley Medical Center (Dr. Katherine Poitras and Dr. Tracy Shannon) will be providing brief social/emotional screeners, education, and referrals for services as needed. Please know that anything discussed will be kept confidential.

This service is free and will be offered during the athletic physicals on August 7 at Carman-Ainsworth High School from 6:30-9:00PM near the gym entrance. This is not a requirement for athletic physicals. This is a free opportunity to access some expert advice provided by Hurley Medical Center.  Please stop by their table for information and to ask questions.

Camp Adventure Loses Electricity but Students Still Keep the Fun Going

Yesterday Dye Elementary experience a power outage for approximately 1 hour.  That didn’t stop Camp Adventure from having fun.  The older group treated it as if they were camping and told stories like that we’re sitting around a camp fire.  The little tikes continued with their creativity as if the lights were on.

Participating students must use their critical thinking and engineering skills to present dramatic and technical performances, competing against other schools in the region for a chance to reach the State competition. Don’t miss your chance to show off your competitive skills!
