Counselor’s Corner

  • Seniors should have completed the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by March 1st.  This is also used by Tech schools to award monies for college.  If the application is not yet finished, you may submit it late.  For the first time, we have offered evening and day sessions for students to meet with Financial Aid experts to help them fill out the FAFSA.
  • Colleges will soon be mailing out letters with information about financial aid offers.  Please pay attention to the details in acceptance letters, which, are also in the process of being mailed.  There will be specific instructions to follow to hold a spot for Fall admissions.  If you have questions, as always, you can contact your student’s school counselor.
  • There are numerous scholarships available for which students can apply.  Deadline dates are looming for many of them.  Please peruse these links from the C-A website in the high school Guidance and Counseling section.
  • Any student receiving a scholarship should bring in the letter or certificate to the Guidance Office so that we can make a copy and include your name in the Honors Program.
  • Students entering the military should check with their recruiter to make sure they have completed all of the details of that process.
  • Senior Exit Projects should be well on the way to completion.  Presentations will begin in April.  Letters will be mailed home regarding your student’s presentation date and time.

  • All students are encouraged to continue a rigorous schedule throughout their senior year.  Colleges, employers, and the military all look for rigor on students’ transcripts.
  • Continue to plan for the colleges that you will apply to in the fall.  Everyone has his or her favorite, it is always advisable to have a back-up plan as well.  It is very normal for a student to apply to three or four schools.  See your counselor if you are unsure of which ones you might consider.  Career Cruising is also a great source to help find suitable colleges, based on many search criterion.
  • Watch for your ACT scores from the MME.    By comparing your scores to those of college admissions requirements will give you information to decide if you should retake the ACT.  You may want to take it in June or August.

10th Grade

  • All students should be aware of what is on their transcript.  Concentrate  on making a strong transcript with the very best grades that you can earn.
  • If you are not yet involved with any extra- curricular activities at school, get involved.  Volunteer or join a club or group.  Unsure of where to start?  See your counselor!
  • Consider taking the ACT in June or August as a practice for the real deal next March.  It is never too early to prepare!

9th Grade

  • At registration, we discussed all students’ transcripts with them.  It is very important that you work hard to keep your GPA high for future opportunities, such as scholarships.
  • Look for ways to be involved at school beyond your classes.  Join a club or spring sport and have fun!
  • Look for ways to volunteer this summer and give back to your community.  Not sure where to begin?  Talk to your counselor!
