According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 1 in 88 American children are identified with autism spectrum disorders. The increase in diagnosis over the past 40 years can only be partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. What are the causes of autism spectrum disorders? What can be done to better treat children diagnosed with autism? Join Dr. Lee Cox at this Your Health Lecture to learn more about autism and its effects on individuals, their families and our health care system.
Dr. Cox is professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Michigan State University. His research interest is the study of neural plasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt to changes in inputs and an essential part of brain development and function. A goal of his research is to gain insight into pathological conditions such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as developmental brain disorders such as Fragile X syndrome and autism.
